TERAMED - Sealing of hydrogeological boreholes and Mobile chamber for anaerobic biotechnology

Novinka

TERAMED, a NANOPROGRESS member, will present its Sealing of hydrogeological boreholes and Mobile chamber for anaerobic biotechnology at the Technology Village during the Cluster Day in the Pilsen Region on 22 October 2025 in Pilsen.

TERAMED focuses on innovations in hydrogeology and biotechnology. It develops advanced materials, mobile devices and solutions using nanotechnology for applied research and practice. It operates HYDROGEOPARK as a field centre for groundwater research.

Name of the exhibit:

  • SWICAS | Sealing of hydrogeological boreholes based on solvent-bonded bentonite pellets
  • ROCKLAB | Mobile chamber for anaerobic biotechnology

SWICAS represents a new generation of seals for hydrogeological objects, based on bentonite pellets bonded with a soluble polymer binder using nanomaterials. ROCKLAB is a model of a mobile anaerobic chamber integrated directly into the rock environment. The device allows safe handling of materials in an air-free environment and is designed for geomicrobiology research, remediation method development and testing of new materials.

SWICAS

SWICAS represents a new generation of seals for hydrogeological objects, based on bentonite pellets bonded with a soluble polymer binder using nanomaterials. Bentonite, with its ability to increase the volume many times and reversibly, allows reliable sealing of boreholes and ensures optimal conditions for groundwater exploitation. The combination of the natural nanostructure of bentonite with polymeric fibrous structures stabilises the pellet shape against swelling and brings significant material savings and handling comfort. The application is demonstrated on a laboratory polygon for groundwater studies.

ROCKLAB

ROCKLAB is a model of a mobile anaerobic chamber integrated directly into the rock environment. The device allows safe handling of materials in an air-free environment and is designed for geomicrobiology research, remediation method development and testing of new materials. The system is equipped with filters and nanomaterial carriers for air and water circulation and offers extensive experimental capabilities. The presentation includes demonstrations of achieving and controlling changes in anaerobic conditions, monitoring values on sensors and indicators, and colonisation of fibrous nanostructures by anaerobic microorganisms.

Close cooperation with the platform, of which the TERAMED is a member, NANOPROGRESS, was crucial for the creation and development of both exhibits presented. Thanks to the sharing of know-how, access to expert capacities and opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation, we were able to accelerate the development of innovative materials for hydrogeological applications (SWICAS) and the construction of a mobile system for anaerobic biotechnology (ROCKLAB). The parent organisation allowed us to participate in expert groups focused on nanotechnology and environmental engineering, which contributed to the technical improvement of the design, validation of functionalities and preparation of laboratory tests in simulated conditions. Thanks to this support, it has been possible not only to create innovative solutions but also to link them effectively with practice and research activities in the field of sustainable management of natural resources.
